I understood that if both parents are tested (e.g. immediate generation) you can get CHIC certification and the recommendation is testing is not needed.  If, as in this case, one or both parents themselves haven’t been tested directly and are cleared by parentage, OFA recommends the subject be tested, and you cannot obtain CHIC certification without it.  Let me know if I’m wrong on that.

Thanks,

Dave

The bitch whose sample I sent in to Optigen last week was exactly this situation except that her sire (Ch. Robin Crest Silver Spirit JH) was cleared by testing and her dam (Ch. Mariah's More Than Diamonds CD JH) was cleared by parentage -- so I have to clear her by testing, and the best one can do in this situation is use the Optigen Discount Days 4 times a year (which I did) or do a 20/20 clinic like the National Specialty or one of the others sponsored throughout the year. That way you can get it done for $120 rather than the full price of $160.

The Optigen Discount Days are on their website and are listed about 2 months in advance. The fall days were Nov 10-16, so I should think February??? I just checked and there is nothing up yet.

I have a young dog out of a CD tested Dam and a CD clear by parentage Sire. Would this qualify for the discount?

FYI there is a significant discount in individually testing dogs out of
two Optigen certified parents. I'd have to check but the number $75
sticks in my mind. Might be conditions attached.

Dave,
I am not sure OFA has anything to do with CD testing or recommendations regarding it.  I believe they only list results for a fee.

You can get CD cleared by parentage (CBP) certification on a dog if both sire and dam are individually certified through Optigen DNA testing, and all three, sire, dam and the dog you are certifying, have DNA certificates.  I believe CBP from OFA is only $15.  A part of why dogs cannot get CD clearance in successive generations is the too common occurrence of dogs with incorrect parentage on their paperwork, in other words, oops issues, therefore the DNA requirement.

<<I understood that if both parents are tested (e.g. immediate generation) you can get CHIC certification and the recommendation is testing is not needed.>>

I am not sure here who's recommendation you are referring to here.  I test my dogs individually regardless of their parent's status if I plan to breed them.  This way, if I only breed to individually tested GSP's, I can certify all of the pups in the litter by parentage.  But that is just me.  And $75 is a drop in the bucket compared to everything else I spend on clearances.
