Sadly, Haiko has been affected by this.
There is seemingly no cause - we think he recieved a head injury. Possible - but not 100%.
He is now retired. Altho, he's not buyng this.
Aside from appearing drunk - he's normal.

I'm so very sorry to hear that your boy (and you) are going through that. Is there any sort of rehabilitation therapy (as with humans) available to help him compensate? Thinking of you both x |

| Sorry to hear about this... so since they are thinking it is head injury and you are retiring him I take it his isn't one of the ear infection or thyroid types that could get fixed and clear up... I am sure he will be happy in your home no matter what.... |

Thank you for the warm words. There is no sign of anything that could have caused it. There is a possiblity that he caused it by shaking his his hard - like when you get out of the water. there was a complete blood work done on him and I have some of the results, and so far everything came back normal. He turns seven in a few days. Now that he has adjusted and the motion sickness has either gone away or subsided, he is good, mornings are wobbly, tho. He's been jumping in and out of the Tahoe, almost on his own. We are giving him prednisone and moxy just to be on the safe side. We will just deal - as if we had a choice? |

| Francine - I am sorry to hear that about Haiko. I am hoping this will clear up on its own with time even if you don't figure out what caused it. Give Haiko and Bregon hugs from TX. |

I'm sorry to hear about this Not sure if this is the same thing, but my sister in law had something similar happen, she woke one day with extreme motion sickness, nausea - to the point where she could not even walk. The doctor recognized it immediately - said that the cause was unknown, but was related to something going on in her inner ear, possible from an infection. She went through physiotherapy, and was able to regain her ability to walk normally after a bit of time, and now no longer suffers from the dizziness. |

pixie bee, I'm so sad to hear this about Haiko. I have heard of this before, but that's about it. I truly appreciate your posting the link so we can better understand. This is going to be hard on both of you, but a lot of love, patience and understanding will help you to deal with it. Haiko is so very lucky to have you. God Bless |

I am so very sorry to hear this but I am holding out hope that it will pass in a short time. I am also very glad that he is dealing with it so well and is doing his best to do what he does and has adjusted to the to the motion sickness (better yet it has subsided). Sending our very best to you and to him - praying it clears up!! |

So very sorry to read this. There is a golden retriever that has this also. She was (and by the way is again) a very fast agility dog. She went through physical therapy and is running agility again. She still has her moments. We have a local rehab person, Robbie Porter, who works wonders. You might want to watch his video with Gris-Gris.

Hey Francine, I'm an expert on Idiopathic Vestibular Syndrome. About 4 years ago, Ziggy (who turned 8 yesterday) went out the door bouncing around and having a blast...at 6:30 in the morning. He ran off around the side of the house along with the rest of the dogs...and five minutes later came back staggering and going in circles. It was without a doubt the scariest thing I have ever seen happen...I was sure he was having a stroke. Managed to get him up on the deck and into the house and made him lie down. Of course it was a Saturday that my clinic was closed but I was in touch with my vet via phone as I truly did not know what happened. During the day he tried walking and would require help as he had a lean to the left...one eye was dialated and his head had a tilt. Sound familiar? It took a good 12 hours for him to kind of return to somewhat normal,, though I continued to walk him on a lead or he would head for the fence and walk along that as security. On Monday I took him in to the vet and they put him on a high powered antibiotic and pred, as well as benadryl. We finally traced it to a middle-ear infection from a perforated eardrum. It took approximately six weeks for him to get back to being Ziggy. He began having regular chiro adjustments and some acupuncture and has his Chinese herbs that get mixed with his food. He returned to the show ring, taking several Best of Breeds and Group placements and is right here beside me...to this day he still has his head tilt that most folks think is "cute" but other than that, he's still the same dog I bred. I have to admit that I really wanted to keep him wrapped in cotton wool for quite some time, and still fuss when he digs at his ear, but sofar, so good...just a lot of dirt in his ears. I think rain would help that out immensely. Let me know if you have any questions, Francine. He'll be fine, its just scary for us (and probably for them too...they don't know why they can't stand up straight) Phyllis |

Roz, thank you for posting the video. We had thought about physical therapy but weren't sure if we were just fooling ourselves. He has trouble with his mouth motot skills. I am going to work on hold and retrieving. Phyllis, thank you. Haiko did appear to be having a stroke. It was compounded by the fact that my daughter was watching all this and I had to get her off to school. She cried and cried. My son was was nearly in shock. the feeling of helplessness can be overwhelming. Anyway, he is going up stairs and soon we will work on going down. He is tilted toward the right and does fall over at times. Bregon was such a good boy about all this. When it happened, the first day he woudn't leave Haiko. This weekend he didn't bother Haiko with rough housing, but they did explore together. I was taken back by Bregon - I did not expect him to react in this way at all. On our morning walks I hook them to each end of the leash and I let the leash run across my palm - and it's as tho Bregon is careful not to pull Haiko around. At any rate, it makes the walk more relaxing for me. The vet we use had no idea what was going on. He diagnosed him with Bell's Paulsey. Now, everyone knows I'm one to take matters into my own hands. I wasn't going to a vet and not be prepared to explain what was wrong with my dog. He refused to accepts my diagnosis. By the time we left his office he was a believer - truth is - I don't think he ever heard of vertibular syndrome. He did not strike confidence in us. And now the 'milking' has begun. Uh, I don't think so. I'll take care of my own dog, thank you. Problem is - we hardly ever go to the vet - so I don't have a regular one. We have an excellent hospital in Manhattan - unfortunately - they has exorbatant fees - but, we've used them in the past and we've been happy. |

Thank you all for being supportive! We are looking into getting a vest for swimming and our goal is to have Haiko do easy hunting from now on.There is no reason he has to have a complete life style change. |

Hey Francine, Sounds like he is making a great recovery. I think it was at least two weeks before I trusted Ziggy enough to let him out by himself. There are four steps he has to go down and up to get into the house and that made it tough. I would take him down the steps and let him roam and then bring him back up and the day I turned my back and he was standing behind me having come up by himself was really exciting. The antibiotics...dang I wish I could remember the name..were given over about a month's time. When we would try to change over to Baytril (which in itself is pretty effective) it would seem like he would regress in his progress. I would keep right on doing what you are doing. You might also look for a vet chiropractor who may be able to help with the residual balance issues. Check under www.avcadoctors.com for one close to you. Ziggy stays on his daily dosage of Chinese Herbs (Gastrodia/Uncaria) also and most likely they can help with that. (I think he could probably be fine without it but since I am such a chicken I'm afraid to try) . LOL! Hugs to you guys and Haiko and Bregon too! Phyllis and the furmob |
