Is there anything that discusses what to look for in a puppy at 49 days for possible show quality.  I am looking for pictures with lines that help explain.  For instance what a proper stack would be.  Front legs in vertical line perpendicular to the table.  Rear legs extended to point where line from ankle to knee forms a vertical line perpendicular to the table.  The spread of the front and rear feet should be natural and result in vertical lines perpendicular to the table when viewed from the front or rear.  etc. etc.  Once in a proper stack what do you look for.  What kinds of things are major problems and what kinds of things are minor problems?

The best evaluation discussion I have seen for all dogs, not just shorthairs, is The Puppy Puzzle DVD. Answers all the questions you are asking in detail. Also says the ideal time to evaluate a puppy is 8 weeks plus or minus 3 days.

I recommend the Puppy Puzzle DVD also and if you have the chance to go to one of her seminars it is well worth the time and money.  It is not only good for show people but those with performance dogs as well.  She also goes through how the structure effects movement. Her website is http://www.dogfolk.com

I'll second the comments on the Puppy Puzzle.  There is an effort underway to produce a GSP Illustrated Standard from the GSPCA but that will not be done in time to help you right now, and the principles in the Puppy Puzzle documents and DVD will still be valid.

I also agree the Puppy Puzzle DVD is excellent. I attended a seminar with Pat Hastings where she analysed puppies and dogs. It was really interesting!
