Hi Everyone,

I would like to teach my GSP to hunt bigger game (deer, moose) and I was wondering if anyone knows of brand of scent I could use that is better than others. I live in BC, Canada, so it would have to be able to be sent here. Any suggestions?

You don't use bottled scent to learn to track big game. You need to get your dog in areas where there is big game and let the dog do its thing. The fresher the trail the better. If the dog does not want to follow a fresh trail (less than 24 hours old) then you need to encourage the dog. Where I am there are deer trails everywhere, you can trip over them. I teach dogs to bloodtrack. I use either blood from harvested game or I go to the slaughterhouse.

Hope you have success!

To start you can use anything you want to track as long as it puts out scent. Your trying to teach the dog how to follow the tack not what to track yet.

Where in BC are you? Its coming up that time of year for hunting big game. Shouldnt be hard to get your hands on some fresh moose blood. I dont recommend letting your dog track fresh or even old moose scent. Thats just stupidity on the owners part.

Ok,so it is illegal to hunt live big game with a dog?The way it was posted I was not sure what the poster wanted his dog to do. Is it legal to track wounded game with a dog?

I know you can't hunt fur animals in Texas with dogs, but you can use dogs to blood track. My cousin trained his Lab to blood track because he goes bow hunting for deer and every once in a while one is hurt, but runs.

IMO dogs should be allowed for that exactly Texas belle. But IMO the dogs should have obtained some sort of title before its allowed. This way the forest isn't full of hounds running deer and the owners just say they are tracking game when really the dogs are running game.

In NY,with a license, you can track wounded game. Jean Jeanenay has started a movement years ago with his teckels. This is a future goal for us.
For now, we blood track and are headed for the 20 hour test next year.

I don't have my dogs off leash during deer season when in hunting country,I don't even go in the woods in deer season. Full season is about 2 months.

If you are talking about using a dog to bay/take down a deer I'm not sure as it is illegal in Texas.  However, hunting feral hogs with dogs is very popular here.  I'm sure the same principles apply so you may want to look into that.  Most guys use lacy/cur breeds to locate and bay the hog and then send in pit bull(s) to catch the hog by the ear to allow for it to be killed or tied up for transport.

As far as blood tracking, I'm not sure as to what scent to use as I have never practiced with Tugger.  Deer blood would obviously be great, but isn't realistically obtainable.  After I shot a buck last year with my bow, I brought him to the site of the kill to see what he would do.  First he found my arrow, then he found some blood drops and followed them about 80 yards to the deer.  Later that week he followed a sparse blood trail over a mile and found the deer.  He was 5 months old at the time.  Point being that practice (while great) may not be needed.  Natural instincts are a beautiful thing.

Jean's book lists some training techniques that might be helpful:

I'm going hunting this weekend and hope to be able to put Tugger on some more trails to see how he does.  He already got pumped up last night when I got my arrows out.
