Went out with our group Saturday, weather started out miserable, heavy rain & high winds, but that didn't stop the boys!!
John and I met up with Buddy, Nick, Ryan and Nathan. We hunted local gamelands (not a club hunt) that they stocked Tuesday for the youths. It was a tough day as the birds were spooky & running really bad, but they managed their limits between 4 kids. Many pics I got in the early AM didn't turn out well due to the rains, so you have to forgive the pic quality....cheapo camera. :-/
Nick going for the flush with Tara on point & Tucker backing her

The gang working a bird, John with Tucker on point

Sun finally poked out, Buddy shooting one over Tara

Wish this was better, Buddy Tara & their bird from previous pic

Tara

Even old Buck got to come out for a little...he only lasted about 30 minutes before his back started bothering him & his rear was weakening, but he had a bird! Even though he was having trouble with his rear legs, you can see his intensity, the old man still has it!

Kids and their birds we got before John left around 10 AM

Then John left & it was Tara & Jesse, this was 5 mnth old Jesses first real hunt and first time ever on phez, he really did a great job!! He had the bird in this shot....Tara came out of the cover in front of him & never saw him already on point, she hit scent & locked up as well, this was his first point on a phez. :D

Jesse backing Tara

Buddy going for a flush with Tara & Jesse on point

Jesses first phez retrieve!! A nice rooster with a story......this bird was hit and hit the ground running. The dogs tracked it over 600 yds total, pointing it several times, but it kept running. Nick finally got it. It ran like a rabbit, finally got it up(Jesse found it), but it couldn't fly well & landed in a tree (had no shot on the flush) This bird took us from one end of the SGL back to the other, the dogs stayed on it though & we rcovered it.

Jesse retrieving the rooster:

All in all once the rains cleared out, it was a great day, going back out Monday afternoon to try for a couple more!!

That's Awesome, I got Wyatt out for his first hunt this weekend as well. Our gamelands are not as nice cover as yours. I am 6'3" and most of the fields in ours (SGL173) was over my head and very heavy not just "winter wheat". Wyatt pointed one bird and it happened to be a rooster right inside the field we were all standing around discussing our next step and I noticed Wyatt locked up with his head turned to the left. The bird was about 3ft from where two of our party were standing. It was pretty cool! That is his first "wild" bird hunt and point. I would love to get him out again next week. I just don't know anybody down here with junior hunters. I just took a chance and hooked up with a group out at the game lands on saturday! Luckily it was a guy I knew from Youth Baseball?

Awesome Pics by the way. I would love to get pics of Wyatt but I think I lose my composure more than he does!

Actually, the cover here was very tall and thick in most areas except the edges also, I am over 6 foot & it was shoulder high to me in many places, we couldn't find dogs on point. The edges were cut & we trried working birds towards them as they wouldnt fly from the heavy stuff. The pic with my old guy is a better area, much nicer cover but very small & had close roads on 2 sides so our shooting area was limited to about 25 acres of it.
I didn't take pics of any points in the heavy stuff, you couldn't see the dog anyway. It tore Taras nose, lips and eyelids up pretty good from running through it for hours, they were bleeding & scabbed up today.

Got out again today, put up a couple roosters after some tough roading work on them, Tara roaded/tracked one for at leat 800 yds before it finally pinned & Buddy missed it, LOL!! Here's what we were working in:

Tara is actually in this pic....center...on point, this is why I only got pics of ones pinned on the edges in the small field with thinner strips, main area, 100 acres or so was all this except the mowed strip up one side & if the birds got into it, you just had to have the dog road them until they went back in & pinned if they didn't run to the end & flush.

Pic of Tara roading the rooster down the open line (bird we chased from one end to the other, I was thinking Tara was going nutz she tracked so far, until she locked up solid & it flushed!!)

Tara & Jesse nailed this one, but it flew the only direction we didn't have a shot, UGH!!(through the thornapple trees ahead of them, went into woods - they pinned it right at the edge)

Really great pictures.
Brave of you to take out more than 1 dog. I am a 'better safe then sorry' person and with kids we don't take out more than 1 dog at a time.
Very cool hunt. how many birds were harvested?

Looks like a good time by all. They have closed our area here in central PA to phez hunting so we will have to travel to get some in this year.

Thanks all!!
Pixie, I am fortunate to have a very good group of young men, they have all been with me now for 4 years except one (2 yrs for him) They are VERY safety conscience & I trust them hunting over my dogs more so than some adults I know. Plus Jesse has been very reliable on point for a young puppy, he holds points and backs very well & I have managed to collar him every time prior to them working the bird. He was not out for the initial AM hunt, it was Tara and one of my buddies dogs, so we had 2 handlers each running one dog.
The 4 kids got their limits(8 birds) in addition to seeing about 8 other birds. Monday we weren't able to put one in the bag, but had 3 roosters up. It was only Buddy that went that evening, so I wasn't worried about running Jesse with Tara under one gunner. I did put him up & just kept Tara down after working the second rooster for so long, didn't want him to buckle under the pressure of the birds running so bad as he is coming along so well & that is hard even on a seasoned dog.
