Now is the time for teach hand signals. When you have her out and she is looking at you hold out your arm and turn that way. Wont be long before she is casting with just and arm. This is how I teach all my dogs. Soon she will recognise an arm straight out and an arm at an angle and cast that way. Another trick I use is when playing fetch in the yard I will make my dog stand or sit, throw the dummy (dog remains) I put my hand in front of the dog pointing the way to the dummy and say my fetch command. Soon they will pick up on this. The biggest thing is teaching that dog that when you say there is a dead bird somewhere there is actually a dead bird and they need to find it. Also before you let her go put her on whoa or just hold her still. Give a whistle blast and let her go, she will soon associate that blast with going farther out so you can cast her out farther whether in water or in the field. A couple times I have winged birds that go across a coulle and the only way to get a dog over there was with the whistle and arm signals once they are over there. I dont think you will have a problem, Invest in a nice neoprene vest (3mm will probably work for you) you can even get them in Blaze orange with a chest protector from Cabela's and they work great even in the field on those chilly days. Not sure how you will be doing your hunting but if your able to use a heater like a Mr. Buddy or keep that dog moving on those chilly days. Try those little methods I mentioned above and Good luck.
PS> I will be out pheasant hunting tomorrow I can do a couple video's with my camera explaining what I meant above if you want.
