hi there

first time on the site. I recently adopted a god at a rescue centre. They defined him as a 5 yr old GSP. Having had him four weeks I think he is moe likely to be between 1 and 2 yr old. I also think he is crossed with a Great Dane. I wonder if anyone has ever come across them and if there is any information available?

Max is a very, very loved addition to our family. Unfortunately we do not have any information on is history as we was a stray. Will try and post a picture soon.

Does anyone know how I can precisely tell his age?

Sometimes the vet can tell by the teeth...but being a rescue it might be hard. I don't know how much experience you have with GSPs, but most of them still act like 1 or 2 year olds till they are 6or so. Mine is 4 and he's still a nut!!! He's more controlled now than he was when he was a puppy, but that's just because we keep him on his toes with more and more new "tricks." Good luck and get that picture posted so we can all see Max ;-)

Lucky7 thanks so much for getting back to me. Two vets have had a look at him, the rescue vet said he was 5. I think this is because he has some white on his snout. The second vet said he is two. Max acts like any pup I have had before (you know silly expressions, the way they jump around on their paws) so I think he is still a puppy, maybe just older than one. I also believe he is crossed with a great dane as he doesnt look all GSP, other GSP owners believe he is not purebreed ( I don't care by the way just curious).

When you mention tricks, other than chewing toys, kong filled with peanut butter, balls, bones etc what tricks do you know to keep his mind busy whilst I am at work??

Thanks again for your help

Our GSP started turing gray on his nose & chin when he was 2...so I wouldn't go by that.  As for tricks to keep him busy while you're at work, I really can't help with that, Seven my GSP is crated during the day.  We found it worked best for him since he suffered from separation anxiety until he was about 3.  We keep him really busy when we're home...he goes "running" eveyday when I get home from work at a nearby park...we're down to about 30min f hard running to tire him out for a few hours.  When he was a puppy, until he was about 2 we would spend at least  2 hours at the park, running, swimming and chasing birdys and that helped....he has calmed down tremendously in the last year, and doesn't need quite as much running...we also have a 1/2 acre of property which he keeps clear of birds and squirrels.  We have also recently started dock jumping with our GSP and he loves it!!!

Good luck and if you want advice from others post your original entry in the General Discussion area..that's where everyone chats about their dogs and their experiences.

We are all a little obcessed...if we weren't there wouldn't be a site just about GSPs with almost 500 members and lots of people just reading the posts!!!  Well good luck with Max...and get that picture posted so we can all see this GSP dane mix.
