Butterball (9Weeks old) got to go on her first hunting road trip with the big girls. For all our efforts I go my limit on Woodcock and my hunting buddy got a Grouse. One time during the day when I gave Butterball a pee break I threw one of the dead Woodcock into some grass. After Butterball had taken care of her business I brought her over into the grass down wind of the Woodcock. She picked up on the strange smell and followed her nose to the source. She then picked up the Woodcock and proceeded to carry it around.
When I called her she was very willing to bring it to me. I did have to pry it out of her mouth though.
Later in the day when I showed her the Woodcock and the Grouse she immediately zeroed in on the Grouse and ignored the Woodcock.
It looks to be a very bad year for Grouse in my favorite hunting spots in the Catskills. Grouse numbers are way down. In spite of the low numbers, all in all it was a very good day. |

This is Butterball and the gang on their second hunting trip.
This year I have set a goal of getting the young dogs out hunting Woodcock as much as I can during the season. Yesterday (10/10/09) was our second trip. It had rained the night before and it was cloudy and damp into early afternoon. Unfortunately none of my hunting buddies were able to come. As a result the ratio of hits to shots taken for the day was way down. I did manage to get a Woodcock for each young dog though. After I shot a Woodcock for a dog I would go back to the truck to load up on more shells and change dogs. It was a fun afternoon.
First down was Pie. She will be two years old day after Christmas. She did very well and even pointed and held on a Grouse until I flushed it. However, being the only gun and thick cover I was unable to take a shot. Here is picture of Pie. The picture was taken later in the day.
Next dog out was Missy. She turned four this past June. As far as hunting goes she has been neglected, so this is here year for fun. She thought she had died and gone to heaven. This is a picture of Missy.
By this time it was time for Butterball to have a pee break. So I threw a Woodcock out in the short cover and let her out. After doing her business I walked her down wind of the cover. Even with a swirling wind she was able to eventually find the prize.
By the time I got the last dog out the sun had come out and it started to warm up. By this time the wind had picked up and things were drying out me included. The last dog out was Pic. She is a litter sister to Pie. Pic goes through cover like a bull in a china shop. In the end she was a hot and tired girl.
This is a picture of Butterball practicing her hunting skills at home. Once she gets big enough to go through the cover where I hunt the young dogs I plan on letting her follow. I hope that will occur before the Woodcock leave around the beginning of November.

| So, the first account I registered now says it is inactive and won't let me activate it. I created another account and the same thing. Says, the account exists, but is inactive and won't let me activate it. Both say to contact an administrator, but the catch is you have to log in to contact them. I guess they just don't want me to login and be a member. By the way I turned off all firewalls and spam filters prior to creating the second account. That wasn't the problem. So, as much as I would love to vote, I can't unless someone can look up a phone number for me so I can call them and find out why my accounts don't work. |

Bev,
Did you ever receive an e-mail from GunDog to activate the account? What e-mail address did you use when you registed? If you have more than one e-mail address make sure the one you registeed with is the one whos spam folder you checked. Beyond that not sure what the problem might be. However, thanks again for trying to help. |

Ken - It is funny because I never got the email from GD for any of the accounts. I thought maybe the first one was spam or firewall and turned everything off both at my local system an at the service provider, then created a new account with a totally different email. Same thing. In both cases I never received a response back from GD. Now both of the account say they are inactive and give me an option to get the activation email resent. I select that and still no email. I honestly can't figure this one out. It is strange. I have never had problems registering anywhere else, but here. I may try it with my work account just to see what happens. |
