Picked up "Deadeye" (Buddy, young man in my youth group) today after work for some hunting, been trying for 2 years now to get him his first grouse, well....he did it!! TWICE! Way to go Buddy!! Here's his first grouse ever: Him and Tara & the 2 grouse Tara retrieving the second grouse We saw 3 others also, plus a rooster we missed. So we decided to hit a spot real quick for pheasant as it was nearing dark, had been a decent amount of hunters out, but figured we'd loose the terrible twins & give it a go. Jesse is coming on big time, we weren't in the field 10 minutes & he had his head skyward, actually standing on his hind legs smelling into the wind & started tracking the scent, right about when I said he was going on point, a hen flushed out far ahead, not far enough though, ole' deadeye dropped her! She was winged & hit the ground running, but the duo was on her & got her quickly. Soon after we got a rooster up (and down, Buddy shot 6 times for 4 birds tonight!) WOW!! What a day, a limit of grouse and phez
That's so awesome! That's clearly a happy kid, you should be proud of making that possible for him. Nice looking pups on birds too. I'm jealous that you get to shoot hens

Thanks guys, he was pretty psyched!! I almost got him his first turkey the next evening also, but we were a hair late getting to the spot I wanted to hunt & bumped the turkeys on our way in, they neevr showed again..... We get to shoot hens as they will not winter due to habitat around here, I am just 45 minutes from the "dividing line" or rooster only areas though, although it's nice, we dont have a native population so only get to work released ones a couple weeks a year. We went again for grouse/phez the next AM, put up some birds but they all seemed to flush behind cover & we didn't get any. Then the weather turned nasty, but we hit it for a bit anyway & turkey hunted the afternoon.
