Hi all, I am new to the world of GSP's, I have been reading as much info as I can find on them. I have found answers to most my questions but one thing.

My family and I are going to look at a litter tonight, and my question is what should I be looking for? We won't be doing any breeding or showing with the dog, it will be a family dog and hunting partner.

Any pointers or tips would be great, Thanks.

Since you aren't showing or breeding, let the dog pick you. How old is the litter? If they are in the 7 to 9 weeks range there will likely be at least one that favors you and your family.

Also, if you've talked with the breeder and set up an appointment time, most likely they will only show you the pups they think are likely to be what you are looking for. (A good family dog, one that looks good but not necessarily a stand out in either show or field potential). Keep in mind they are all of course adorable but listen to the breeder too.

From a breeder's viewpoint, when I first start talking puppies with people we try to find out what their wants and needs are and their personalities are like...we know from watching pups who is more likely to be very active or quiet and cuddly, who has dominant personalities, etc. so it sometimes is a pretty easy match...and somemtimes not so.

Hope that you found the pup you were looking for and welcome to the forum...be sure and post some pix for us!

I've got to second Bev's opinion...  I've never picked a pup -- they have always picked me.  I can nearly guarantee that there will be one that is drawn to you -- I like the ones who tend to be less "wanderers" and more "clingers".  If your really in to it, there is a "test" called the Volhard aptitude test that you can use -- gives you some tips on what to look for:

I would definitely suggest telling the breeder what you are looking for in a dog and then let him/her narrow it down for you. After that, take the pointers from the pups. Maybe revisit the litter a few days later to see if your choice still holds up.

Well we went and looked at them he picked us. He will be coming home in 3 weeks, just in time for X-mas.

Very nice and a gorgeous chocolate head. I see some attitude in those eyes. Have you decided on a name yet?  My guess is he is going to be pretty dark when he is full grown.  Do you have any pictures of the  mom and dad?

Thanks for the complements.

The breeder had already named him Axel, but said if we wanted something different to let her know. We are going to stay with Axel, we like it.

I don't have pictures of the parents, but did get to meet them. Both very calm and loving. Mom is very dark with lots of ticking, Dad has less ticking.

I can't wait till we get to bring him home, he is going to be a great addition to our family.
